In Sunday night’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, the AMC series pulled off one the most shocking zombie kills of all time — literally.

The episode titled “100” followed Daniel Salazar‘s journey in the aftermath of burning down the Abigail Estate, leading him to Dante’s dam where he eventually reunited with Victor Strand. Along the way, however, Daniel was having trouble accepting the horrible things he had done both prior to and in the apocalypse.

At one point, Daniel hit a point so low that he was ready to die. When a massive walker approached, he initially attempted to fend it off with a broom, but quickly realized his resistance was futile. The father of Ofelia dropped to his knees and prayed, relying on faith to protect him from the imminent grim fate.

Then, lightning struck the zombie, sending Daniel into the nearby river flow and eliminating the intensely threatening infected. The bolt went straight through its head.

It was unlike any zombie kill featured on either Dead series.

“I think Salazar feels like those guys that landed on V Day, and didn’t get killed,” Daniel actor Ruben Blades tells ComicBook.com about the moment. “They’re thinking, ‘Why me, why me? Why was I spared?’ There’s a bigger purpose that no one can respond to rationally. I think he’s confused by the fact that better people than him suffered and died, so he must have some reason to have survived.”

“The one thing I find, that after this episode, I have found that Daniel is a lot more spiritual than he ever has been,” Blades said.

According to Blades, his character was pondering all of his losses, thinking, “I’ve been a failure, I couldn’t rescue my wife, I can’t find my daughter, I failed them all, I’m just not deserving to continue.” It was there where he turned himself over to faith and spirituality for the first time. “He starts praying. He kneels and he prays. The one that prayed was Griselda, not him. So at that point, I think he just says, ‘Okay, God I’m in your hands. Kill me.’ And what does God do? He doesn’t grant him his wish. He does something that is the most incredible thing I’ve seen in the whole Walking Dead thing, I’ve never seen an infected guy hit by lightning!”

Other Great Kills

While one of the most unique zombie kills on either AMC series, it is far from one of the most impressive.

On the previous season of Fear the Walking Dead, Nick Clark used his bare hands to dig through the eye sockets of a walker and mash its brain from the inside. It was a gruesome moment which turned some fans away from their TV screens for a moment.

Of course, there have been a few memorable walker dispatches on The Walking Dead, as well. No one will soon forget the time Daryl Dixon smashed a walkers head in the trunk of a car or the time he used a chain to whip through multiple heads at the same time. Perhaps a flare gun through a walker’s eye should also be mentioned here! In fact, many of the best kills from The Walking Dead can be seen in the Top 5 Zombie Kills video at the top of the page.ย

Honorable mention outside of the Dead universe: Zombieland’sย Zombie Kill of the Week winner which saw a piano dropped from a building and on top of an attacking zombie!
