Major spoilers for The Walking Dead's mid-season finale, "How It's Gotta Be."

AMC has released the shocking final moments of 8x08, which sees a sickly Carl revealing an incurable walker bite on his midsection.

The surprising moment delivered on AMC's promise of an epic, shocking mid-season finale that saw Alexandria fending off an attack from a retaliatory Negan and the Saviors.

Carl made his last stand evacuating Alexandria as it came under fire, with the community's survivors hiding out in the sewer tunnels below.

"I just didn't see it coming," Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln told ComicBook.com of losing the younger Grimes — Rick's only remaining full-blood relative.

The revelation will have ramifications on not only the back half of season 8, but all of The Walking Dead moving forward.

"This is bigger than any other death that we've ever had and we realize that as it plays out in the back eight," Lincoln said. "The back eight is completely different from the front eight. This episode happens and everything changes. We spin off into a completely different new world."

The Walking Dead returns with its mid-season premiere in February, with 8x09 ending Carl's story.
