Ted

, Seth MacFarlane's debut feature film about a teddy bear who has grown up alongside its owner to become a crude companion, made $54.1 million this weekend, exceeding expectations and setting a new opening-weekend record for an original (non-sequel) R-rated comedy. The stripper drama Magic Mike, Steven Soderbergh's Channing Tatum-starring stripper movie, opened at an impressive $39 million, marking the first time ever that two R-rated films have opened with more than $20 million in the same weekend. It's Tatum whose major summer tentpole film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, vacated this weekend and moved its release date nine months down the road until March. That set the stage for Ted, formerly expected to open in mid-July (and likely to debut at #2, as it would be in competition with a strong second week from The Amazing Spider-Man), to take the pre-holiday opening. That film, which will open on Tuesday, is expected to make $150 million or so over the July 4th holiday weekend. The weekend's top five movies are below, compliments of The Hollywood Reporter. 1. Ted, $54.1 million. 2. Magic Mike, $39.2 million. 3. Brave, $34 million, $131.7 million. 4. Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection, $26.4 million. 5. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, $11.8 million, $180 million.
