The latest Nintendo Switch firmware update, version 4.0, contained several exciting new additions. Video capture, controller updates, save data and profile transfer... There were so many things to get excited about, and Nintendo didn't even reveal them all! We had to do some digging to figure out that wireless headphones will now work with the system, and today, we found out that GameCube controllers will now work on the Nintendo Switch using the official Wii U adapter!

In the video above, you can see that when you plug in a GameCube controller via the adapter, it will register on the Nintendo Switch as a USB controller, and all of the buttons will map automatically. That does not mean that buttons will map where you want them, mind, so you may have to go into the settings and rearrange your buttons the way you like them. As you can see, though, the controller works perfectly.

We've seen videos of gamers playing a variety of games using the GameCube controller. Playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, especially on the recreated Game Cube tracks, is a dream come true, but there is another game everyone is obviously waiting to play with this sucker.

Where's Super Smash Bros?

As soon as we discovered that the GameCube controller adapter worked with the Nintendo Switch, an urgent thought pushed into our brains: "Is Nintendo preparing for something? Is there a game on the horizon that may be best played with a GameCube controller?" Obviously the Smash Bros. speculation threads on social media and various message boards has risen sharply due to this development, and we don't mind it.

We'll keep you guys updated. We're not expecting any big Nintendo Switch news soon, especially with the Animal Crossing mobile Direct on the way, but hopefully this leads to something more than speculation.
