The reviews for X-Men: Apocalypse are in and the next big super hero film set for release is sparking some mixed reactions.

Yesterday, ComicBook.com's Lucas Siegel published a review of the upcoming film which returns Bryan Singer to to helm and it was largely positive. Following up on his headline calling the film, "Fast, Funny, and Full of Fan-Service," Siegel says that Apocalypse "has a lot of action, balanced with humor and emotion" and "a ton of fan-service."

For long time X-Men fans, those who grew up loving the comics or 90's cartoon, Siegel's review sounds quite pleasing. For the average moviegoer, however, X-Men: Apocalypse may or may not give them what their looking for. Punching in at a disappointing 47% on RottenTomatoes through 36 reviews, most critics have good things to say about the film but heavily shroud them in negativity.

Here are a few examples...

"The latest in the X-Men movie franchise is just X-meh." Brian Truitt, USA Today

"Considering the amount of time spent watching Apocalypse round up his forces, you'd think he'd be a marginally interesting villain but that isn't the case." Travis Hopson, Examiner

"It repeats a lot of what has come before, but solid thrills make it more fun than old, for now." Joshua Starnes, ComingSoon

"The more the film harks back to other X-instalments, the more you'll wish you were watching those instead." Helen Ohara, Empire

"Disappointingly [succumbs] to an exhausting case of been-there-done-that-itis." Geoff Bershire, Variety

"The idea of an apocalypse means every dial has to be turned up to 11 and this film certainly provides bangs for your buck, although there is less space for the surreal strangeness of the X-Men to breathe." Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

"Despite the undeniable presence of a huge amount of action, X-Men: Apocalypse is decidedly a case of more is less." Todd McCarthy, THR

"Apocalypse isn't quite a dog. But it is a movie with way too much of everything except the things that should matter the most -- novelty, creativity, and fun." Chris Nashawaty, EW

"Taken as the next chapter in the series, Apocalypse is an undeniably fun and entertaining adventure and does a pretty good job of establishing Xavier's next class." Daniel Kruppa, IGN

"Apocalypse includes everything you'd want in an X-Men movie, including two of the best superhero set pieces ever. But after Days Of Future Past, it feels a tad underwhelming." Greg Wakeman, CinemaBlend

"Starts off strong with highly enjoyable introductions and a fun "getting the band (back) together" kind of feel, but then it fizzles out and turns into a mind-numbing montage of poorly choreographed combat and outrageous, widespread destruction." Perri Nemiroff, Collider

On the whole, it sounds like X-Men: Apocalypse has moments that most cinema goers will enjoy but lacks that extra emotional or intellectual moments to resonate with critics. It sounds like fans who are going to the theater just to have fun, celebrate the X-Men, and chow down on some popcorn will leave happy, though.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27.
