'Star Trek: Discovery' Showrunners Say Enterprise Will Help Clarify Canon

The USS Enterprise is back and it has a new mission: figure out how exactly Star Trek: Discovery fits into Star Trek canon.

The Enterprise made an unexpected appearance in the season finale of Star Trek: Discovery and that’s just a tease of things to come. The ship will play a role in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery as well.

Series showrunners Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts tell TVLine that the Enterprise’s arrival will help them answer some of the lingering questions that longtime Star Trek fans still have about the show’s place in Star Trek history.

“I think one of the biggest things it’s going to allow us to do is start to develop how Discovery fits into canon,” Harberts said. “One of the big things that’s been polarizing for fans is, ‘We’ve never heard about Discovery! How does it fit? She’s related to Spock?’ All those things. And what it’ll allow us to do is hit that straight-on. We see it as an exciting opportunity to say, ‘This is exactly how Discovery fits into the timeline. This is exactly how we can reconcile the choices we have made.’ Because at this period in time, the Discovery and the Enterprise are the crown jewels in the fleet, so they should be face-to-face.

However, just because Star Trek: Discovery is going to deal with Spock’s relationship to his previously unmentioned foster sister doesn’t mean that Spock himself will actually appear on the series.

“I can tell you: All you have to do is look at Michael Burnham and Sarek, and the look they exchange at the end of the show and ask yourself what that could be about,” Harberts said.

In a separate interview, Harberts and Berg discussed the challenge that would be present by trying to recast Spock for Star Trek: Discovery.

"We certainly aren't confirming that we're even going to introduce Spock and we certainly are not casting that role, either. We live a lot in memory and flashback. The center of our show is always Michael Burnham. "We realize how incredible Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto's performances were and what JJ Abrams and the original series were able to pull off with that character. Finding another actor that could even come close to what Leonard Nimoy did with the original portrayal, we'd never want to go down that road.
