According to Stephen Amell, an Arrow-verse and Supernatural crossover is one fans deserve. But is it the one they need? If you were to ask most fans that question, then they would give a resounding yes. Sure, the series don't exist in the same universe, but when has that ever stopped shows from mashing up before? If the shows' cast members are down for it, then it might be worth an episode or six.
The idea of a DC/Supernatural crossover came to light earlier this weekend at Entertainment Weekly's Pop Fest. The celebration gathered several of The CW's biggest stars from show such as Supernatural, Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Sometime during the convention, a slew of those actors took a moment to snap a picture of themselves backstage - and the Internet lost it.
"This is the crossover we need," Amell wrote when he posted the star-studded photo to his Instagram. The image shows Amell (Arrow) posing for a picture along with Jared Padalecki (Supernatural), Jensen Ackles (Supernatural), Grant Gustin (The Flash), Caity Lotz (Legends of Tomorrow), and Melissa Benoist (Supergirl).
Clearly, the actors look comfortable with one another. The CW family members got even closer later on at the event if one of Gustin's photos has anything to show. The actor posted a photo of Padalecki smacking his rear with Lotz stood by his side for moral support. "Here's a shot of [Jared Padalecki] smacking my a** and me not hating it," the actor wrote.
If fans were to get a DC/Supernatural mash-up, they would definitely be in for a treat. Since the latter series is all about paranormal mysteries, hunters Sam and Dean Winchester wouldn't be too surprised to meet heroes like Supergirl or even The Flash. They might be surprised that the duo aren't plotting to take over the world though.
As for the DC Comics crew, the superheroes would probably be chuffed to meet the Winchester Brothers. Sure, the squad would butt heads at first, but they gang would eventually get along and inevitably save their multiverses from total annihilation. Really, all the showrunners need to do is create a plausible way for the Supernatural guys to enter the DC Universe at this point.
Obviously, there's no word on whether the two universes will ever collide on The CW. For now, fans will have to suffice with the network's annual Arrow-verse crossover as this year will bring them an epic four-way tie in.
"This year, we're doing by far the most ambitious crossover we've ever done," executive producer Marc Guggenheim told EW. "It's basically a huge three-part story that also brings in Supergirl, so it's crossing over all four shows. It's telling one big epic movie of a story. It's not setting up any other spin-offs, it's just big, bombastic, huge action. There's also some really poignant character moments. There's a lot of plot lines, particularly I would say in Flash and Legends, that come to fruition in the crossover. It's by far the most ambitious thing we've ever attempted. I want to say it's by far one of the most ambitious things anyone in network television has ever attempted. It's completely insane."
As for Supernatural fans, they will have to come to terms with the series' lack of crossover potential. The truly desperate can cling to a recent exchange between Ackles and Jeffrey Dean Morgan over on Twitter. The two actors joked around about a Supernatural/The Walking Dead crossover that got fans hyped.
