26 Years Later, Beloved Dark Fantasy Manga Series Officially Confirms its Final Battle

CLAMP is one of the most renowned manga creators of all time, known for dozens of incredible series. Among the creator’s most famous works are the 1990s classics Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and more. Additionally, the creator has also contributed to several acclaimed anime series as a character designer, including Code Geass. One of CLAMP’s most beloved series is xxxHOLiC, which began serialization in 2003 and reached its conclusion in 2011. Unlike the creator’s previous works, this one leans towards a dark fantasy genre, even if it focuses on a magical girl story. Surprisingly, the creator also returned with a sequel titled xxxHOLiC Rei in 2013.

The sequel series was just as beloved as the first part, despite never getting an anime adaptation. However, the anime adaptation of the first part, produced by Production I.G., originally aired in 2006 and became a massive hit. It’s been over 26 years since the overall story began, and now the manga has finally entered its final battle with its latest chapter. The update comes from @MangaMoguraRE on X, a reliable source of information regarding several anime and manga series. So far, there have been no updates on the sequel manga getting an anime adaptation.

What Is xxxHolic Rei About?

CLAMP casually connected their biggest titles into this weird multiverse, and this one is no different. Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, the 2003 manga, reused the same character names and designs as the two leads from Cardcaptor Sakura, establishing them as alternate versions of the same characters. Characters from xxxHolic also made a crossover into Tsubasa, establishing that they exist in this same multiverse. The original story takes place when Kimihiro Watanuki, a high school student, began living alone after his parents passed away.

His days were filled with nuisances since he could see otherworldly creatures that were attracted to him. On one eventful day, while being chased by a horde of spirits, he ran to a mysterious store to seek shelter, where he met Yuko Ichihara. As the mistress of the store, she claims to grant any wish of the visitors as long as she is properly compensated. In order to be able to afford enough money to make his wish come true, Kimihiro begins working in her store. However, while his initial goal was to stay as far away from spirits as possible, the job requires him to become further involved with them and the world of the supernatural.

The sequel continues his daily struggles as he works for Yuko and encounters even more spirits along the way. Unlike most manga sequels, xxHOLiC Rei follows a continuous narrative, acting as both a sequel and a continuation of the original story. The series brings new challenges for Watanuki while focusing on his relationship with Yuko. The manga went on several hiatuses throughout its run, even though CLAMP continued working on other titles. So far, the sequel series has released four volumes in English, all of which are available on the official website of Kodansha.
