Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’s Doma And Shinobu Voice Actors Discuss Their Gruesome Battle (Exclusive)

With Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle only a few hours away from arriving in theaters in North America, anime fans could probably use a reminder of some of the biggest battles that will take place in its run time. Tanjiro and Giyu will be taking on Akaza in one of the series’ biggest confrontations, Zenitsu will be colliding with a demonic force from his past, and the Insect Hashira Shinobu will be taking on one of Muzan’s most malicious lieutenants, Doma. Recently, we here at ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Stephen Fu and Erika Harlacher about portraying Doma and Shinobu, hinting at what is to come for their brutal battle.

To start, Fu discussed portraying such an evil character as Doma and how to approach blending maliciousness with a carefree attitude that the demon holds, “He’s very playful. He’s never really grown up, you know what I mean? He always plays like the little brother in terms of the Upper Ranks and he’s really annoying, pushing people’s buttons. He’s just trying to have fun because none of this is serious to him. That’s how I approached it, because everyone’s got something they can relate to like that, little brothers and stuff like that. I pull from that experience and this is what a little brother or someone would do. Doma doesn’t see himself as a villain, he just sees himself as, you know, doing the right thing, being a nice guy.”

On the flip side, Harlacher discussed taking a very different approach than Fu in bringing Shinobu to life for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, “As opposed to Doma, who doesn’t care, Shinobu cares a lot about all the tings that are happening right now. You know, the last thing we saw from her, the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps died, and they just immediately dropped into this castle and were separated. There’s so many emotions going on right from the start and Shinobu’s a character that, up until this point has done a really good job at masking her emotions. It’s finally time to see where her emotions come forth. To be able to explore that side of her vocally was really exciting for me.”

In a fun twist, we asked both Stephen Fu and Erika Harlacher who they’d like to voice if they had to switch sides, with Doma’s voice actor joining the Demon Slayer Corps and Shinobu’s voice actor joining Muzan’s bloodline. To start, Harlahcer was quick to state that she would love to jump into the shoes of Tanjiro’s sister, Nezuko, “I guess if I really wanted to challenge myself with voicing a demon, I could never replace Abby Trott, she’s fantastic, but Nezuko is such a unique acting character. There’s so much there, and applause to Abby’s throat for holding up after all the screaming that Nezuko does. She’s such a complex character.”

On the flip side, Fu would be more than happy to jump into the shoes of the young swordsman who has a specialty in electricity. “I would love to play Zenitsu because, as while growing up, I’ve always loved the ‘sleeper’ and ‘sleeper builds’ you know? You don’t expect them to be as powerful as they are, and he’s just all that. He’s comedic relief, sure, but then when things get real, he really pulls through.”

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle hits North American theaters on September 12th.
