Marvel’s cinematic superheroes will be choosing sides in Captain America: Civil War, but Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will find herself somewhat stuck in the middle.

Natasha Romanov was introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Iron Man 2, where she kept an eye on Tony Stark. After joining the Avengers, Natasha began fighting side-by-side with Captain America on S.H.I.E.L.D. mission, then joined Cap’s new team of Avengers following the fallout of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

She’s got history with the leaders of both sides of this conflict. While the trailer and promotional materials for the film so far have her siding with Tony, Johansson says it’s both more and less simple than that.

“You know, I think she understands where everyone is coming from,” Johansson tells Entertainment Weekly. “And none of it really matters to her, you know? There’s a bigger problem at hand and she’s, I think, strangely, kind of the mediator. Which is not exactly how you would imagine her to be. But I think she really does see both sides of the coin and I think her strength is that she’s not personally involved.”

Will Black Widow’s mediation be able to repair Cap and Tony’s broken bromance? We’ll have to wait and see.
