While your pull list might already be full, there are plenty of books that are worthy of your attention this Wednesday, including the five books highlighted on this list. Whether the book is a great jumping on point, a big finale, or just something different than the predominant superhero fare, there’s something here for everyone. Of course, there are more than five books worth your time this week, so here are a few runners-up that you should definitely check out if your wallet permits.

Venom #150 kicks off Eddie Brock’s return to the character and is written by David Michelinie with art by Tradd Moore, Ron Lim, and Gerardo Sandoval. The description is included below.

REUNITED, AND IT FEELS SO GOOD! Or, feels so bad? However it feels, Eddie Brock and the Venom symbiote have been reunited, and they’re web-slinging their way around New York again. Featuring a host (hah!) of Venom creators from the character’s near 30-year history, this monstrous anniversary spectacular welcomes guest artist TRADD MOORE for an oversized and brutal main story AND a lethal story featuring fan-favorite creators David Michelinie and Ron Lim, reunited! With questions still lingering about how the symbiote was separated from Flash Thompson, and what lies in its future now that it’s reunited with Eddie Brock, this is one issue you can’t afford to miss!

The Truth comes to a thrilling finale in Wonder Woman #23, which is written by Greg Rucka and art by Liam Sharp. You can find the official description below.

“The Truth” part five! The conclusion to Diana’s search for the truth takes her on a journey into darkness. But the price of understanding may be one sacrifice too many for Wonder Womanโ€ฆ

The choice to become human is at the center of Buffy The Vampire Slayer #7, written by Christos Gage with art by Rebekah Isaacs and Dan Jackson. The description is below.

Having determined that breaking out of the Safe Zone is impossible, Buffy and Willow struggle with the decision of having their magic removed so that they can return to the world outsideโ€”in the hopes that breaking in to the magical internment camp might go easier. But once their magic is gone, will two normal human girls be able to succeed?

The good doctor and the rest of the Marvel Universe have to stop Sir Isaac Newton in Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme. The issue is written by Robbie Thompson with art by Javier Rodriquez. The description is below.

Sir Isaac Newton, scientific genius, pioneer and now nigh-omnipotent sorcerer, has come to the present-day Marvel Universe. First order of events? Take down the Avengers. The scary thing is, with his current power level, they don’t stand a chance.

Alright, with that out of the way, here are the five books you should give a chance this week!

Matt Mueller: Rapture #1

Valiantย is doingย something completely differentย withย its newย Mattย Kindtย helmed Raptureย miniseries, andย it allย kicks off thisย week. Fans are anticipating theย returnย of Shadow Manย to theย Valiant Universe, butย theย universeย truly hingesย on an unpredictableย 12-year-oldย girlย named Tama. Rapture #1 is written by Matt Kindtย with art by CAFU, and you can find the official description below.ย

On a scarred landscape, two otherworldly armies prepare to battle one last time, vying for control of a massive tower named from an ancient language no longer permitted to be spoken.

One army is led by a primeval force named Babel, whose goal is singular: to breach “heaven” no matter the cost. The only thing standing in his way is a gray-haired barbaric warrior, filled with rage and regret โ€“ a man who sees this battle as his last chance for redemption. But he knows his depleted forces have little chance of victory unless aid comes soon.

Enter Tama: A 12-year old girl on the crest of a hill overlooking the battle, who has just become humanity’s only hope. The last in an ancient line of mystics who protect the Earth, she has foreseen this battle and knows millions will perish if she’s unable to stop it. Now Tama and her ragtag team of malcontents โ€“ Ninjak, Shadowman and Punk Mambo โ€“ must somehow defeat an elder god hell bent on piercing the heavens.

In the game-changing footsteps of THE VALIANT and BLOODSHOT U.S.A., Valiant’s next shocking standalone event is here! On May 24th, Shadowman’s long-awaited return to the forefront of the Valiant Universe begins with a terrifying breach between two worlds, only in RAPTURE #1 (of 4) โ€“ featuring covers by Mico Suayan (Bloodshot Reborn), J.G. Jones (Final Crisis), Kano (Swamp Thing), and CAFU (Action Comics)!

J.K. Schmidt: Your Black Friend

Breaking up the superhero-heavy week is the graphic novel releaseย of Your Black Friend by Ben Passmore. Being able to communicate the similarities and differences betweenย those of varying races is importantย as ever, especiallyย during this time of policialย and culturalย divisiveness, makingย Your Black Friend especially relevant.

Your Black Friend is written by Ben Passmore, and you can find the official description for the graphic novel below.

Ben Passmore’s necessary contribution to the dialogue around race in the United States, Your Black Friend is a letter from your black friend to you about race, racism, friendship and alienation.

On the heels of viral online success with 500,000+ views, the revised print edition of the Your Black Friend comic is in gorgeous full color on fancy matte paper stock.

Inspired by Frantz Fanon’s White Skin, Black Masks, Your Black Friend is just as direct, immediate, and necessary as Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me and Claudia Rankine’s Citizen. Known for his politically charged science fiction comics, enthusiastic fans of Passmore’s work include Brandon Graham (Island, Image Comics), Carolyn Nowak (Lumberjanes) and Josh Simmons (Fantagraphics).

Your Black Friend is in comic shops this week.
