Underrated Hero Just Became DC’s Secret Weapon Against Darkseid Before His DCU Debut

DC Comics is on a roll right now, with Superman and the second season of Peacemaker getting fans more interested than ever in the original superhero universe. The comics have been firing on all cylinders since last summer, setting up a new war against Darkseid in DC All-In #1. Superman has been one of the epicenters of that main plot, and Superman #30 is showing off that one of DC’s most underrated heroes, who just so happens to be one of the most anticipated characters to join the DCU, is one of the keys to defeating Darkseid and has become a target of the God of Evil’s main servants, the Darkseid Legion of the Absolute Earth.

It all began with DC All-In #1, when Darkseid sacrificed his elite servants and took control of the power of the Spectre. He used this extra power to attack the Justice League Watchtower, with the Justice League using their power together to seemingly defeat him. Darkseid died, but left behind a scar in the universe. This leads to the most unlikely hero to volunteer to explore the fissure โ€” Booster Gold. Gold disappears in the rift, and the latest issues of Superman have been about Superman and Superboy-Prime trying to get him back. Superman #30 reveals why Booster is so important and could either give Darkseid the universe or cost him everything.

Superman #28-30 told readers the story of why Booster Gold was so important to the Darkseid Legion. Booster Gold went through the rift just as it opened and ended up absorbing Omega energy, the power that Darkseid represents in the DC Multiverse. The Darkseid Legion went after him for two years, trying to get him back for Darkseid, so that the Final God could kill him and take back the Omega energy inside of him. After two years of running, the Darkseid Legion finally captured him, with the Legions of multiple Earths fighting against them to slow them down. It just happened that Superman and Superboy-Prime got there just in time to save him.

Darkseid has been trying to take the ultimate power for a while, and this latest scheme would have worked if it weren’t for Booster Gold going through what is now called the Omega Rift. We learned in Justice League Unlimited that the Rift could give godlike power to those who tap into it, and it looks like Booster Gold has forged the ultimate connection to it. Superman was able to save Booster Gold and bring him back to the Watchtower, giving the team the ultimate weapon against Darkseid in the weeks leading up to DC KO.

Superman #30 is on sale now.
