Donna Troy Has Waited Long Enough for Her Wonder Woman Moment, and DC Needs to Make It Happen

Wonder Woman is one of DC Comics‘ most important heroes. She was the blueprint for every female superhero that came after her and the publisher has used her to tell stories related to Greek mythology as well as feminism. Diana has become the key to an entire corner of the DC Multiverse, with numerous amazing characters introduced in her adventures, including the various Wonder Girls. There have been three of them so far, but let’s be real: the first one is the best. Donna Troy was introduced when Wonder Girl was brought to the Teen Titans – basically Wonder Girl was created to be the Wonder Woman-equivalent of Superboy, but the creators of Teen Titans didn’t know that – and has since become a legend in her own right.

She was created because of a retcon, and they have played a huge role in her history throughout the decades. Donna Troy’s origin is the definition of complicated and this has honestly held her back. Donna, despite her convoluted origin, is one of the most popular characters in DC history, though. She was a huge part of the success of New Teen Titans, but unlike fellow Titans alums Nightwing, Wally West, and Cyborg, she’s never really gotten her big break. Donna has been held back in numerous ways, but it’s about time for her to finally get the upgrade she needs – becoming Wonder Woman.

DC Fixed Donna Troy and Now They Need to Make Good on That

As with many problems in modern DC, all Donna’s problems can be traced back to Crisis on Infinite Earths. This story streamlined the DC Multiverse into the DC Universe, and made massive changes to many characters, including Wonder Woman. In this new version of the DC Universe, Diana didn’t come to Man’s World until the modern day. This meant that she never had Donna as a sidekick. Now, this was obviously a huge problem for the character; she was saved from an orphanage fire by Wondy. Her whole origin was changed, with it being established that she was the child of the Titans of Myth. This was the first time she was wholesale changed, but not the last; the New 52 made her into a villain.

Titans Annual 2025 finally fixed her origin, re-establishing the pre-Crisis one. This was the change that Donna Troy needed. I’ve always been of the opinion Troy was never going to get a big solo role with her origin in the state it was. While superhero comics are known for being confusing at times, Donna’s origin had been multiple choice for several decades now. While existing fans love her as a character, putting her in the spotlight would mean that readers would find out about all of the changes made to her origin and that would be a problem. Fixing her origin is the change that was needed and it’s time that DC pulled the trigger and put her where she belongs – as Wonder Woman.

Donna has acted as Wonder Woman in the past – after Infinite Crisis, it was revealed that she had taken Diana’s place. However, Donna was only Wondy through the first story arc of Wonder Woman (Vol. 3). Since then, she’s joined the Justice League when Dick Grayson was Batman, disappeared in the New 52, was brought back as a villain, and has since went back to being a Titan and getting retconned into her current form. Donna, in a lot of ways, is the DC version of Jean Grey. She’s a complicated character who plays a massive role in the lives of numerous heroes and has a devoted fanbase who want to see her thrive.

Donna has been in the fight against evil for most of her life and could bring an entirely new vibe to Wonder Woman. She’s not someone who was trained to be the best and beat the rest of her people, she’s an orphan who has been searching for belonging for years. She’s devoted to the Themysciran way, but she also sees its weaknesses. Diana brings a regal sense to the mantle that Donna wouldn’t, but she has something that Diana doesn’t – she’s actually human. She understands Man’s World in a way that Diana can’t.

Wonder Woman is going through something of a time in her book. She’s a mother now, for starters. It’s the perfect time to have her sit out of things for a while and Donna is the only person who can really fit her boots. She’s trained for this her whole life, but more importantly, the character deserves it. She’s been kicked around by DC continuity changes so much and it’s about time she got the character-redefining moment that becoming Wonder Woman would be. Fixing Donna’s origin was great for her fans, but it’s about time that she got the call-up to the big time and making her Wonder Woman is her next step.

Donna Troy’s Time Is New

There are few DC characters out there with the kind of history that Donna Troy has. She only exists because of a mistake that no one caught until it was almost too late. We talk a lot about the confusion that is the origin of Hawkman, but Donna makes Hawkman’s origin look quaint. She’s been changed so many times that honestly, it makes sense she’s never got the big nod before now. You don’t position characters as convoluted as Donna in an A-list mantle, but all of that has changed now. Donna is ready.

Donna Troy is a beloved part of the DC Multiverse. Part of it is the fact that she’s such a complicated character – some of us like a character who is such an underdog and we enjoy the weird little snarls of continuity. I’ve been calling her DC’s Jean Grey for years now, but there’s a huge difference between the two of them – Marvel pushes Jean Grey. Donna Troy fans got a taste when she became Wonder Woman (it was 20 years ago, he says, feeling like old woman Rose from Titanic) but it’s time we got the full course. Donna Troy’s time is now and and the best way to prove it is to make her Wonder Woman.
