How Wonder Woman Sets Up A Sequel

After a long wait, Wonder Woman is finally in theaters around the country. The movie is dominating the box office, it’s become a critical darling, and fans – DC and otherwise – have fallen in love with the charm of Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot.

In short, Wonder Woman in a bonafide hit.

It’s no surprise that there have been talks of a sequel all week long. With a movie this successful, both critically and financially, there’s no reason to believe a sequel wouldn’t already be on everyone’s mind.

So, going forward with the notion that a sequel is definitely going to happen, we’ve got to wonder, what could the next movie contain?

If you think about the first movie, and the events that could happen in Justice League, a Wonder Woman sequel was set up pretty well.

How, you ask? Well, let’s take a minute and explore.

This probably goes without saying, but there are Major Spoilers ahead.

Modern Day

There have already been reports and rumors stating that the sequel would take place in modern day, and that claim is backed up by the events we witnessed in Wonder Woman.

First of all, the movie ended back in the present. Diana exists, here and now, in 2017. That’s clue number one.

The second – and most important – clue supporting this comes from some combined conversation in both Wonder Woman and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Diana helped stop WWI, but it’s likely she didn’t put the suit back on until she assisted the other trinity members in the fight against Doomsday. She said in that movie that she “walked away from mankind 100 years ago.”

100 years ago would have been the end of WWI. While Diana stopped the war, and realized men could be good, she probably saw a bit more of the world around her and realized that wasn’t always the case. War continued without Ares.

It’s possible that Diana spent those 100 years trying to discover her origin, and learn of her newound abilities. But it’s clear she wasn’t being Wonder Woman.

At the end of the film though, she put the suit back on and went out to help people once again. This took place after BvS, and she’s taken on the mantle once again.

Justice League

With Justice League coming out later this year, that will likely tell the next part of Diana’s story. She’s already met Bruce Wayne, and they’re working together to find the rest of the league.

There’s no telling what will happen in the film, but the lack of mythological characters confirmed for it likely means that it won’t dive too far into Diana’s history.

She may discuss it with some of the other characters, particularly with Aquaman since they could share a mythological history, but that’s the most the movie will do.

Once Steppenwolf is behind them, Wonder Woman will have another solo story to deal with.

The Gods

She may have killed Ares, but the story of the greek gods was still left a little open-ended. It was said that they were killed at the hands of Ares however there could always be one or two that slipped through the cracks.

With Diana being the daughter of Zeus, and being passed off to be protected, there is room for Hercules to exist in the same fashion. 

The other child of Zeus could be lurking around the world somewhere, also hidden from what he truly is. If Diana finds out about the existence of another god, she’ll be hot on the case.

This would set up a great storyline for her to follow in the sequel film, provided that she’s not given a new conflict in Justice League.
