When it comes to The Batman, no one can question the commitment level of Joe Mangianello.

Ben Affleck waffling; the directorial on-again, off-again, finally-signed of Matt Reeves, be damned…. Deathstroke is ready for whatever.

In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, the star of Magic Mike — and Mr. Sofia Vergara — said that he is upping his routine in advance of production.

“I’m very excited,” he told the magazine. “I just started kung fu, qigong and cutting with a live katana blade.

“I grew up rooting for the villain. These characters mean so much to so many people and there’s a real opportunity to polarise the audience or have them walk away maybe not agreeing with my character but understanding why he does what he does. That’s a really fun challenge.”

Why Mangianello is doing all of those challenges is interesting as many would just use a stunt double — Deathstroke wears a mask, after all — but the actor is going all-in on the role.

The evolution from his ‘big break’ as Flash Thompson in Spider-Man to Alcide Herveaux in HBO’s True Blood and then Big Dick Richie in Magic Mike has been one that even takes Mangianello by surprise.

“There is something about turning 40,” he said. “All of a sudden I am getting everything I’ve always wanted.”

The hope is that DC fans will be getting everything they always wanted with his starring opposite Affleck.

The Batman is a tentative title for the DCEU Batman solo film, which is still expected to star Ben Affleck, under the direction of Matt Reeves, based on a script co-written by Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck. No release date has been set, but speculation is that production will start sometime late(r) this year.
