Suicide Squad: The Top 5 Reveals
Suicide Squad has added another chapter to the DC movie saga, and in doing so, the supervillain team-up film has opened a lot of doors to other areas of the DC Extended Universe. We've already done articles about all the Easter eggs in the movie, and its connections to DCEU characters like Batman and Justice League Dark, so now it's time for a different topic: the surprises we learned during this chapter of the DCEU. Here are the Top 5 Reveals from Suicide Squad. (Obviously there will be SPOILERS)
Task Force X's Origin
Task Force X's Origin
Suicide Squad was never that shy about informing us how Task Force X came together - if marketing didn't tell it, the three redundant introductions we got in the movie did. However, the why and when the events of Suicide Squad were always in question.
It was surprising to learn just how directly the events of Suicide Squad are connected to the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The death of Superman and power vacuum his absence creates are the very reasons that Amanda Waller is able to push drastic measures like psychotic killers, metahumans and mystical beings being allowed into US government service.
Justice League Cameos
Justice League Cameos
Yes, yes - if you are a hardcore fan (or just a savvy reader of ComicBook.com - your go-to for all entertainment news) then you knew about this. Go ahead and gloat. However, if you were just a casual viewer (and hopefully a new reader of ComicBook.com) then this was a genuine pleasant surprise.
...Of course if you were a casual viewer, you probably only got half the fun out of the two Justice League character cameos in Suicide Squad. Sure, you probably recognized Ben Affleck's Batman busting down Deadshot, Joker, and Harley Quinn - but unless you paid real close attention to the Justice League trailer, the appearance of Ezra Miller's Flash busting Captain Boomerang during a bank robbery probably required some Internet research later.
...Luckily, there's ComicBook.com for just those sorts of answers.
Harley Quinn: Murderer
Harley Quinn: Murderer
Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was a major breakout star of Suicide Squad, bringing an aloof-yet-savvy unpredictability to the screen. An impressive elevator fight sequence showed how agile and fierce Harley can be in combat - but admittedly, Suicide Squad didn't necessarily show how Harley earned her place beside an outright savage like The Joker - well, except maybe for one big hint.
People spotted the "blink-and-you-miss-it" moment during Harley's title card introduction early on in Suicide Squad: text reading that she was an accomplice in Robin's murder. The chronology of when Harley was created by Joker, and when Robin was murdered is vague, but maybe some of those deleted Joker scenes reveal more about what really happened to Robin?
Weak Villains
Weak Villains
Suicide Squad had extensive marketing and previews, but in the midst of all the footage that was revealed, there was one big unanswered question: who was the villain? We saw creepy boil-faced monsters and some destructive mystical threat teased in the trailers, but little more than that.
As it turns out, there was very little else to the villain - villains as it were - in Suicide Squad. Though teased as a Squad member in press events, Cara Delevingne's Enchantress was actually the source of the trouble in Midway City - and then, she herself was hardly in the film at all, mostly seen gyrating in front of some unexplained portal/destruction beam thing. Her "brother" Incubus (the epitome of the word "obscure") was little better - seen lurking around the portal/beam listlessly until finally throwing down with Task Force X.
Biggest surprise here was the irony that a movie about villains would have such weak villains for them to fight.
Batman Exposed
Batman Exposed
We already broke down the Mid-Credits Scene of Suicide Squad and how it helps to set up Justice League, but there was one big surprise placed onto the end of that scene: Amanda Waller knows that Bruce Wayne is Batman.
She delivered the line as only "The Wall" could, telling Bruce "Stop working nights!" as he's nearly out the door. Bruce Wayne/Batman is a pretty meticulous and thorough watchful eye in the DCEU - but Waller's knowledge of metahumans, mystics and even The Batman himself makes her the Queen of Secrets.
