This game came out of nowhere. Apparently Neon Drive has been around for a bit on mobile, but will soon launch on PS4 looking better than ever. The game is a unique take on the "runner" genre, combining intense neon visuals, devilish stage design, and a pulse-pounding synth soundtrack, and the result is glorious. Take a look at the gameplay trailer above to get a taste of what's coming your way when Neon Drive launches on August 8.

"Neon Drive is a journey back into the 1980s – a time when people still wrote letters, and when they thought — as Douglas Adams put it — that "digital watches were a pretty neat idea." To be fair, back then we were secretly expecting to have robot coworkers and drive flying cars by the year 2000."

I think you can probably tell that this is going to be a paradoxical type of game. You're going to want to lounge back and soak in the brilliantly vibrant visuals and colors and jam out to this gnarly original soundtrack, but you're going to have to pay attention. Your gaming skills and reflexes are going to be put to the test as you run stages over and over again, very likely squeezing your controller in rage as you fall victim, once again, to the many bright and polygonal obstacles that are thrown your way.

"Neon Drive brings you eight levels, each with a unique theme and a surprising twist in the gameplay. Using a two-button control scheme, you'll have to make your car avoid oncoming obstacles, timing your moves to the rhythm and melody of an awesome custom-made synthwave soundtrack, composed and produced by Gustav Eriksson Pengus.

You had us at "synthwave." Remember the first time you saw footage of Thumper and thought that it would be a great game to chill out and play at the end of a long day -- mainly because the visuals looked so warm and trippy? Yeah, that game turned out to be hard as balls, and we have a feeling that Neon Drive is going to offer a similarly challenging, and similarly rewarding, experience. Check it out next week!
