One of the Best Konami Games of All Time Are Free to Download Until July 27

Some of the best Konami games ever released are free to download and play between now and July 27. After July 27, the free period will end, and the games will once again be locked behind a purchase. The new offer is limited to Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, and that is because it is part of the weekly Xbox Free Play Days promotion. To this end, the Konami games are available on other platforms, but this offer is not. Meanwhile, Xbox One is not included in the offer because the games are not available on Xbox One.

Between now and July 27, more specifically, Xbox gamers can grab Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Metal Gear Solid. While the latter is the best game here, the first two Metal Gear games being included individually is noteworthy because they are only available to purchase in a larger collection — Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 — normally. The first Metal Gear game is only 4-5 hours long. Meanwhile, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is about 6 to 7 hours long. Obviously, both of these games can be easily completed between now and then. And then Metal Gear Solid is about 11 to 13 hours long. So all three games individually and collectively can be beaten in this window, which is not always the case with Xbox Free Play Days. As with most games made available via Xbox Free Play Days, a subscription to Xbox Game Pass is needed to access this particular trio of games for free.

The First Three Metal Gear Games

For those who don’t know the history of the Metal Gear series, these are the first three games in it. Before it became known as Metal Gear Solid, it was Metal Gear. The first game, Metal Gear, debuted in 1987 via the mind of legendary game creator Hideo Kojima and Konami. And it was the first mainstream stealth game ever released. It’s also undeniably the best stealth game on the NES. Three years later, in 1990, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake followed, as well as spin-off Snake’s Revenge. Then in 1998, the series would evolve into the Metal Gear Solid era with the release of Metal Gear Solid, one of the great games of all time, as evidenced by its 94 on Metacritic.

If you are going to begin the Metal Gear series for the first time in 2026, we recommend watching summary videos of the first two games and skipping straight to Metal Gear Solid, which is really when the series as we know it today begins. The first two games are not very consequential, and they are both a little rough around the edges by modern standards. That said, if you have time, both are pretty short and won’t take very long if you want the full, complete experience of the series.
