Today we get another look at Star Wars Battlefront II through the eyes of its developers, as the PlayStation Blog wraps up the final part of its developer interview. Today we’re hearing from EA Motive’s Mark Thompson and EA Criterion Games’ Matt Webster to get a better idea of what we can expect from multiplayer, which promises to be the best in the series to date, and the single player mode, which promises to challenge long time Star Wars fans on an empathetic level by telling a human story from the side of The Empire. Star Wars Battlefront II – Massive Worlds and… by WWG

The initial promise with Star Wars Battlefront II, offered by Executive Producer (Criterion) Matt Webster himself, is that the Star Wars Battlefront multiplayer experience is going to be bigger and grander in scale than ever before. Battlefront is a series, like Battlefield, which has built its foundation upon epic multiplayer battles that you can’t find anywhere else.

While 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront was one of the most gorgeous games we’d ever seen, and featured some unforgettable moments as we took part in this large-scale online battles, fans ultimately ended up feeling bored and empty. That’s something EA doesn’t intend to allow this time around.

A huge difference between Battlefront II and the 2015 original is that Battlefront II will feature a full-length story campaign, which is being handled by EA’s team at Motive. They’ve gathered a team of incredible producers and writers, including top talent from LucasFilms. Steve Blank says in the interview that his team at LucasFilm had developed a whole series of stories to tell leading up to The Force Awakens bridging the gap between that film and Return of the Jedi. Those stories ended up evolving into the campaign we’ll all be playing on November 17, and we’re going in a very bold direction.

For the first time ever, we’ll be assuming the role of someone who is utterly loyal to The Empire. EA is teasing that fans will finally get to know the people behind those iconic white and black helmets, who for decades have been nameless lightsaber-fodder. While we will take control of Star Wars‘ iconic heroes from time to time, this story will be a soldier’s story. We’re eager to see how we’re asked to empathize with those who we usually write off as “the bad guys.”
