During yesterday's much-anticipated Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic Con, news broke that Sylvester Stallone had joined onto Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2. Rumors began circulating about the action star's involvement earlier this year, but now, it seems like Rocky Balboa's creator is heading to the great, big boxing ring in the sky. And, according to James Gunn, fans can expect to see Stallone filling in a key role.

Speaking with CinemaBlend's Sean O'Connell, the director said Stallone's character has, "a very, very key, important role. It's not a huge role. He's a great and key supporting character."

Well, there you have it from the man himself.

So, while fans may not see Stallone taking up a chunk of the film's runtime, they will get to watch him do something surely important. Right now, it's anyone's guess as to what Stallone will be doing. Marvel, as always, is being fiercely protective of the sequel's storyline to prevent any unwanted spoilers from hitting the Internet. And, when it comes to Stallone's casting, it seems like Marvel is being particularly tight-lipped.

Fans were only able to see Stallone appear in a super-short shot of SDCC's Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 footage. And, to make things worse, his appearance didn't feature any identifiable clothing, make-up, or prosthetics that would've helped fans figure out who he was playing. Some are still holding onto the long-held rumors of Stallone being cast as a Ravager, but others are now wondering if Stallone will be associated with Kurt Russel's newly revealed character, Ego the Living Planet - AKA: Peter Quill's dad.

For now, it's likely that Marvel will hold onto Stallone's character to prolong the legendary actor's mysterious involvement. That means it's now up to the fans to go into full-on sleuth mode and see if they can suss out a plausible theory to explain who Stallone might've been cast before the sequel is released on May 5th 2017.
