Disney is a force to be reckoned with these days. The pop culture juggernaut is known internationally for its numerous franchises, and Disney has made a killing off films like Captain America: Civil War and Zootopia throughout the year. Now, in the wake of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Disney has managed to break a rather impressive industry record. The studio has earned just over $7 billion at the global box office.
Rogue One debuted on December 16 to critical fanfare from moviegoers all over the world. So far, the film has earned more than $300 million internationally, and that total is what helped bolster Disney’s global box office numbers. The previous industry record of highest-grossing global box office belongs to Universal Studios has the company earned $6.89 billion in 2015. Films like Furious 7 and Jurassic World helped the latter studio reach the feat, but Disney beat them out this year with its gangbuster line-up.
Disney has rolled out a slew of highly lucrative films this year. Aside from Rogue One, Disney pulled in plenty of cash thanks to Captain America: Civil War, Zootpia, and Finding Dory. Each of the films earned more than $1 billion at the international box office, and Jungle Book came very close to that figure. It earned $966.5 million, and Disney pulled in more money thanks to projects like Moana and Doctor Strange.
“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations,” Alan Horn, chairman of the Walt Disney Studios, said in a statement. “These films work because each one has not only something for everyone, but everything for someone.”
Along with its international fanfare, Disney has been killing it domestically as well. This year, Disney has secured five of the top six openings in the U.S. to date. And, with Zootopia and Finding Dory in its line-up, Disney now has four of the top five animated films of all time.
