With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 getting ready to blow fans away, director James Gunn is facing the release date with tempered expectations.
He's not terrified at the reaction or the box office success like he was with the first film—now, he's just excited that people are finally going to see a project that he's been working on for years.
And people seem to be responding enthusiastically to the movie's trailers, and it's already tracking to be one of the most successful films of the year.
That's because the first Guardians of the Galaxy was so well received. It was a perfect blend of humor, heart, stakes, and action—not to mention the kickass soundtrack from the Star-Lord Peter Quill's Awesome Mixtape Vol. 1.

The music backing the film is one of the things that sets it apart from the other Marvel Studios offerings, but it is not the sole aspect. In fact, Gunn didn't even mention it when he was asked by Fandango what Guardians Vol. 2 has that other Marvel films do not.
No, he was concerned with a lot of other parts the film contains.
"I do think there's a lot more stress on the relationships. I think a lot of people saw the humor in the first movie, and that's back in this movie. But I also think there's a beautiful aspect of this film where the visuals are such an important part of this movie, more so than most Marvel films. There's a lot of stuff like that in Doctor Strange, but we really take it to a different level."
Comparing the visuals to the Scott Derrickson-directed trip through the multiverse is pretty lofty, considering that movie was like taking a roller coaster through the movie Inception.
We'll see if it stacks up and how Guardians Vol. 2 compares to the first wonderful film when it premieres May 5.
