‘90s Horror Fans Can’t Get Enough of This Slasher Movie, And It’s Easier to Stream Than Ever

After the golden age for horror in the ‘70s and ‘80s brought about classics like Halloween, The Exorcist, and The Shining, the mid-1990s introduced a new slasher revival era. Largely driven by Wes Craven’s 1996 hit Scream and extending into the early 2000s with films like Bride of Chucky and Freddy vs. Jason, the period brought a new wave of iconic slashers to the big screen, reviving the genre for a new generation of horror fans. The streaming era means that many of those films are now available to watch from the comfort of your own home, and now one of the best slashers from the ‘90s is easier than ever to stream.

Why You Should Watch I Know What You Did Last Summer

There’s no denying that I Know What You Did Last Summer is a love letter to the genre and the ‘90s. The movie doesn’t shy away from leaning on classic slasher tropes, including a compelling mystery that successfully builds suspense and an iconic villain in The Fisherman that completely embodies the suspense of the genre and is pulled straight from an urban legend – not to mention the truly unique and brutal kills thanks to his hook. The movie is also a time capsule of the era, featuring a quintessential ‘90s cast with great on-screen chemistry, plenty of teen angst and guilt, and a great all-’90s soundtrack.

I Know What You Did Last Summer largely drew mixed reactions from critics and fans upon its release, currently holding 46% and 41% critic and audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, but became a cultural touchstone that not only revitalized the slasher genre but also helped create the blueprint for teen slashers that followed. The movie remains a cult classic horror film to this day and the best in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise. With a more than $125 million worldwide box office haul against a $17 million production budget, the movie was also a box office success, helping launch an entire franchise that now includes four films, including 2025’s sequel, and a TV series.
