Game Of Thrones Author & Marvel Fan George R.R. Martin Loved Ant-Man

There were a lot of doubts about Marvel’s Ant-Man movie throughout its production, but it seems the final product was able to satisfy at least one of Marvel and Ant-Man’s oldest fans, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

Martin is an old school Marvel Comics fan (he had a letter printed in the original Fantastic Four #20), and Ant-Man was among his favorite characters. He was concerned about the Ant-Man movie when he found out it would focus on Scott Lang rather Hank Pym, but he ended up ranking the film among the best Marvel – or any other studio with a Marvel movie license – has ever produced:

ANT-MAN has a proper balance of story, character, humor, and action, I think. A couple reviewers are calling it the best Marvel movie ever. I won’t go that far, but it’s right up there, maybe second only to the second Sam Raimi/ Tobey McGuire Spider-Man film, the one with Doc Ock. I’ve liked most of the Marvel movies, to be sure, I’m still a Marvel fanboy at heart (Excelsior!), but I liked this one more than the first AVENGERS and a lot more than the second, more than either THOR, more than the second and third IRON MAN and maybe just a smidge more than the first (though I liked that one a lot too).

Martin did have small complaints. Like many fans, he wishes there was more Wasp in the movie. He also points out the Marvel villain trope, where the villain is a bad guy with the same powers as the hero (Iron Monger in Iron Man, Abomination in The Incredible Hulk), be he calls these complaints mere “quibbles.” You can read his full blog entry at his Not A Blog website.
