Hulu and Peacock Both Just Added the Funniest Movie of the 2000s

For better or worse, there’s been a decline in comedies on the big screen in recent years, but back in the 2000s, laughter was infectious at theaters across the country. The decade was a golden age of comedy movies as major studios released massive hits that are now comedy classics like Step Brothers, Wedding Crashers, and White Chicks, and several new Hollywood funnymen rose to prominence. The streaming era has brought many of those films to a wider audience, and now the funniest comedy movie of the 2000s is easier than ever to stream after it joined both Hulu and Peacock.

Subscribers to the Disney-owned and NBCUniversal streamers can now stream The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The Steve Carell-led raunchy comedy started streaming on both Hulu and Peacock on September 1st. The hilarious film stars Carell as Andy Stitzer, a 40-year-old electronics store stock boy who has no luck with the ladies. When his co-workers discover that he is still a virgin, they set out on a mission to get him a girl and help him lose his virginity. Directed by Judd Apatow, the movie also stars Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, Seth Rogen, and Catherine Keener.

The 40-Year-Old Virgin celebrated its 20th anniversary in August 2025, and it remains a timeless comedy. The movie masterfully blends its raunchy humor with a heartfelt romantic story led by an endearing and relatable main character who is hard not to love. The movie also features a goldmine of comedic talent in its cast, who improvised much of the film, including the legendary chest-waxing scene.

The movie grossed $177 million at the global box office, is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with an 85% critics’ score and 84% audience score, and cemented both Apatow and Carell as big names in Hollywood. The film was released the same year that Carell took on the role of Michael Scott on The Office, the coinciding comedic roles establishing the actor’s lasting legacy as a leading man and one of the best comedic actors. Meanwhile, the movie marked both Apatow’s feature directorial debut and the start of the Judd Apatow era of comedy, a period that helped define the genre for the decade with other films like Knocked Up (2007), Superbad (2007), and Bridesmaids (2011).
