Netflix Quietly Adds New Karate Kid Movie Just 4 Months After Release

Netflix is always adding new films and television shows to its extensive catalog, but while most of the time we have an idea of when things release, every so often the streaming giant sneaks in a premiere we weren’t expecting. That’s once again the case this week, as today Netflix debuted a new Karate Kid movie on the service, and only 4 months after its release in theaters.

That stealth release was for the latest film in the classic franchise Karate Kid Legends, which actually brought the reboot and the original films into the same timeline. That means that everything Karate Kid now exists in one single universe, which is actually quite impressive, and now you can stream the latest adventure to your heart’s content on Netflix, as it hit the service at 3:00 AM this morning (via TV Line).

A Karate Kid Universe on Netflix

With Karate Kid: Legends, the universe of Karate Kid has been unified, bringing together the original trilogy, The Next Karate Kid, The Karate Kid reboot from 2010, and Netflix’s own hit series Cobra Kai. Legends takes place after Cobra Kai season 6, which brought that series to a close, and even better is the fact that all of the films and shows are now in one place.

At one point in time, only Cobra Kai was available on Netflix, as the other films had left the service, but earlier this year, the other films made a surprise return, leaving the most recent film as the only one left to complete the collection.

For those not familiar with Karate Kid: Legends, the film features the return of the reboot’s Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) as he seeks out the help of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). LaRusso is recruited to help Han’s student Li Fong (Ben Wang) prepare for a martial arts tournament in New York City, and the stakes are high, as if he wins, he will be able to save the pizza parlor of Victor Lipani (Joshua Jackson) and his daughter Mia (Sadie Stanley).

We also get to explore Mr. Han’s backstory a bit, including the fact that Mr. Han was a friend of the late Mr. Miyagi, who was the legendary mentor of LaRusso. Miyagi continues to be an important touchstone in the franchise, and that is also true of Karate Kid: Legends as well.
