Shazam! Fury of the Gods is heading for a disappointing opening weekend at the box office. Despite initially tracking for a similar opening to what the first Shazam movie had in 2019 ($53.5 million), Shazam! Fury of the Gods is now estimated to open 44% lower than the original, earning $30 million over its first three days. That’s following an opening day total of $11.7 million (compared to the first Shazam!‘s $20.3 million). The total is enough for Shazam! Fury of the Gods to top the charts this weekend, despite being a lower box office debut than expected.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods has a lower CinemaScore than the original, earning a B+ to the previous film’s A. It also has a “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critics’ consensus that reads, “More unfocused and less satisfying than its predecessor, Shazam! Fury of the Gods still retains almost enough of the source material’s silly charm to save the day.”
