Star Wars: The Force Awakens IMAX Featurette Released

"I'm a huge fan of what IMAX is about," director JJ Abrams says in a new featurette. The feature focuses on the scenes that were shot using new IMAX cameras for a sequence that fans will "be able to experience in a way they haven't before."

John Boyega specifically says that he saw the IMAX cameras in the desert, so it's safe to assume we'll see at least one scene that's in Jakku in IMAX, the larger-format screens. Of course, this has also caused some controversy, as only 18 of the 400 IMAX screens in the U.S. can utilize the native 70mm projection, and none of those can also do 3D. It's a trade-off; you can get one in its truest form, but not the other, so that's something to keep in mind if you haven't already bought your tickets (or when you go see it for the second or third time).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens debuts in U.S. theaters on December 18th (with showings as early as 7pm the night before) and will inhabit every IMAX theater in the country for at least the first four weeks of its release.
