Lions Gate can't be happy about the opening weekend box office for The Expendables 3, and one has to wonder if the early leak of the film online damaged the box office. The Expendables 3 followed up a disappointing Thursday opening night with a disappointing Friday opening day.

On Friday, The Expendables 3 took in an opening day box office of $5.88 million, which was only good enough for third place. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles led the Friday box office with $7.92 million, while the Guardians of the Galaxy took a close second place with $6.95 million.

Early weekend projections have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles winning the box office for second weekend in a row with over a $26 million weekend. However, there is still a chance that Guardians of the Galaxy could pull off an upset, as the film is projected to do in the $23 million to $25 million range for its third weekend at the box office.

Meanwhile, the news is expected to get even worse for The Expendables 3. Let's Be Cops pulled in a surprisingly strong $5.6 million on Friday, and the film is expected to actually overtake The Expendables 3 over the weekend. The Expendables 3 could very well be looking at a fourth place finish in its opening weekend.
