The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug Box Office

After taking in $8.8 million in midnight screenings, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug finished its opening day with $31.145 million at the U.S. box office. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was by far the number one movie at the U.S. box office on Friday, taking in over five times as much as the next highest movie on the charts. Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas finished in second place with a distant $5.74 million. Frozen took third place with $5.105 million, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire took fifth place with $4.1 million. Even though there was quite a bit of drop off for fifth place, Thor: The Dark World managed $796K to take the number five spot in its 36th day of release. Despite its strong victory over other films at the box office on Friday, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug's opening day was less than the opening day of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The first Hobbit movie took in $37.125 million at the U.S. box office on its opening day.
