A Third X-Files Movie Has Been Written By Chris Carter

The X-Files wasn't able to translate its small screen success to big screen like Fox had hoped. Series creator Chris Carter (with Frank Spotnitz) penned both feature films, 1998's Fight The Future and 2008's I Want To Believe, and revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour that he wrote a third film.

"I actually wrote a third movie, just because I was interested in the idea of where that might go," Carter told the audience. When Fox approached him about bringing The X-Files back to television, Carter considered repurposing the script for the series. "I let my wife read the third movie," he shared, "and she said 'I think not for television.'"

Any chance of a third X-Files film will depend on how strong (or poor) the ratings for the upcoming mini-series are. If the ratings are good, Carter seems more interested it sticking to TV. "I'm waiting for Fox to come back and ask for more," said Carter. "Then we'll talk about it."

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their iconic roles as Agent Fox Mulder and Agent Dana Scully in the upcoming event series which will encompass a mixture of stand-alone investigative episodes and those that further the original show's seminal mythology. In the opening episode, Mulder and Scully take on a case of a possible alien abductee.

The X-Files has a two-night season premiere airing Sunday January 24, 2016 10-11pm ET/7-8pm PT (after NFC Championship Game) and Monday January 25, 2016 at 8pm.
