When Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns in the fall, the series will air two distinct half-seasons -- not unlike what audiences have seen in the past for cable series like The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad -- and in between, Marvel Studios and ABC will run Marvel's Agent Carter, the S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff featuring Hayley Atwell as Captain America's World War II-era girlfriend who helped Iron Man's father launch S.H.I.E.L.D.

During an interview with IGN released earlier today, series star Clark Gregg priased the plan.

"I think it's a great idea. I think in the present age of TV, nobody wants to go down two weeks here, three weeks there," Gregg said. "I don't like it. I don't think our fans liked it. It didn't let us keep the momentum going with the story. It's been amazing to watch how much the show clicked into gear, first of all, after the events of Winter Soldier, but when we got to run 10 episodes without a break. You can download the season of so many shows on Netflix in one day -- who wants to take a two-week pause? I don't!"

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was criticized by fans for having a number of seemingly random, one- or two-week breaks during its first season. Later on, it seemed clear that the breaks had been inserted in order to better sync up the season with Marvel's theatrical releases.

They were also accused in some circles of drawing out stories for too long over the life of the season; with two shortened mini-seasons, it's distinctly possible that such criticisms will hold less weight (and allow for two rather than one massive uber-arc to be told each year).
