Though the coalition of studios and hardware manufacturers is still a few months away from locking down the format specifications for 4K UHD Blu-ray, and that means disc players won't be on the market until the end of 2015, some distributors are already throwing their weight behind this super-high resolution in a big way.

As reported by my friends at Film Divider - and I e-mailed them to verify that this actually comes from an official source - 20th Century Fox have decided that they'll be releasing 4k versions of their entire 2015 summer lineup. I'd imagine that this would be as downloads in the first instance, though discs will likely follow once the players are on the market.

Their biggest tentpole next year, I'd think, will be Josh Trank's Fantastic Four film. Those lucky enough to have 4K UHD TV sets, and by Fall 2015 that could be a decent number of people, will be able to watch the film with a higher pixel count than many - actually, most - cinema screens.

Fox's commitment to Digital HD at the moment is more obvious than at any other studio. I think they're going to throw their weight behind 4K in a big way. I'm prepared to bet this will also mean UHD re-releases of the six existing Star Wars episodes too. In fact, I'd even go so far as to say these will be along sooner than people are expecting...
