With Image Comics gaining in popularity, the publisher has yet another milestone to celebrate as its comic Black Magick has been optioned for television. Groundswell Productions has requested the rights from creators Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott to develop a TV series.

Groundswell's Michael London said, "Greg and Nicola have created an indelible small town character and put her at the center of a gripping mystery driven by a fresh take on the mythology of witchcraft. Our plan is to find a world class creator who can realize their vision for series and then take it to the cable and streaming networks."

For those unfamiliar with the series, Black Magick follows Rowan Black as she works as a robbery/homicide detective in Portsmouth, a fictional port city. However, solving crimes isn't what drags Rowan into danger; Rather, her resurfacing past throws Rowan's life into chaos as she discover the truth of who she is - and who she shall become. In fact, Rowan comes from a long line of witches, and Black Magick follows her struggle to align her professional and personal life as her growing powers threaten all of humanity's safety.

Discussing the optioning, Rucka said that, "We had a lot of attention and some very difficult choices to make when it came to finding Black Magick a home. Ultimately, Michael and Groundswell took the day with a passion and sincerity that certainly make Nic and I feel that Rowan is in very good hands."

By this point, Rucka is probably used to sharing creative control of stories as many of his comics have been or are being adapted. His series Lazarus is being developed by Legendary TV while his novel/comic Queen & Country is at Fox. Rucka also acted as an executive producer on Whiteout, a film based on Steve Lieber's popular comic.

Image Comics has been doing well recently and gained massive attention as its comic sales have been increasing. With titles like The Walking Dead, Saga, The Wicked + The Divine, and more in its line-up, Image Comics will probably find itself with more of its titles optioned in the future.
