The sound of fans cheering worldwide could be heard once Netflix announced they were in talks to bring a new Voltron animated series to their video streaming platform.

Now we have a first look at the big man himself, and he is quite close to the original, sans a few crests or symbols here and there. They've managed to give him some modern stylings without losing the essence of the iconic look. Co-Executive producer Lauren Montgomery says that is what they were aiming for.

"We're trying to keep as much of that classic feel to it as we can, because ultimately we have huge amounts of nostalgia for (the original) show."

Voltron Legendary Defender will differ a bit from the original in its handling of the five characters from earth, including Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, and Shiro. They will have backstories this time around, and will be more fully developed characters. The same goes for Princess Allura, as Montgomery explains.

"Princess Allura, a main hero, will be more realistic, Montgomery promises: "She doesn't have to be the (greatest) fighter right off the bat. She's still a princess from a peaceful kingdom. But she's certainly not fainting at every little thing that overwhelms her."

The show is throwing a wide net as far as audience, appealing to nostalgic fans of the series and younger kids who don't know who Voltron is, and they're doing that by giving the show "a Game of Thrones feel with some humor".

Fans will get a chance to see some footage this Friday at WonderCon, and the 13 episodes will release sometime later this year.
