A high-definition restoration of Star Wars, also known as Episode IV: A New Hope, was released online recently. The film was restored by a group called "Team Negative One," who somehow acquired an original 35mm film print of the film and have digitally restored it.

They then released the film online for free, illegal download through torrent sites. The release is the most direct version of the original theatrical release, since it's been taken directly from an original print. They scanned each individual frame of the film, doing digital clean-ups on them one by one. It's a remarkable feat, even if its release, since not through Lucasfilm or Disney, breaks the law.

Still, it does give hope, if there are still old 35mm reels floating around out there, that an official "original theatrical cut" release in HD could come some day, even if all the rumors pointing to it have been false so far.
