Universal Pictures has hired Phillip Gawthorne to write the screenplay for Kojak, the film adaptation fo the 1970s TV series. Vin Diesel is set to play the lead role of Lieutenant Theo Kojak, played by Telly Savalas in the original series.
The new film will try to build a new franchise around the lollipop chewing New York Police detective. James Bond writers Neal Purvis & Robert wrote a previous draft of the screenplay.
Gawthorne is a British writer who has worked on long-running BBC series such as Eastenders, Casualty, and Holby City, and is also writing the rmak eof Cube for Lionsgate.
Diesel will produce Kojak with Samantha Vincent for One Race Films, along with Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark for Bluegrass Films.
