Sony's big-screen adaptation of the hit Angry Birds franchise took the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend, knocking Captain America: Civil War out of first place in its third week.

That means Civil War, like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice before it, spent only two weeks at the top of the box office before being ousted. That's not too much of a surprise given how competitive the field is in the spring and summer, although it's worth mentioning that surprise hits Deadpool and The Jungle Book, as well as Disney's animated hit Zootopia, managed to cling to a third-week hold at the box office.

Angry Birds earned $39 million compared to Captain America's $33 million this weekend, a fairly tight race, especially when you consider that nothing else cracked $25 million. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising from Universal cracked $20 million with a $21.7 million opening weekend, and this week's other new wide release, Warner Bros.' The Nice Guys, earned just $11.3 million. The Jungle Book, meanwhile, dropped from second place last week to fifth this week with $11 million.

It looks like Warner Bros. pulled Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice from wide release this weekend, giving it a lifetime theatrical run of $328 million domestically and $870 worldwide, assuming the rumors of a theatrical release for the R-rated Ultimate Edition don't come true.

Without a holiday to bolster its numbers, Open Road Films's Mothers Day dropped 66% to tenth place, just below The Huntsman: Winter's War, which hasn't yet surpassed $50 million at the domestic box office in spite of five weeks in release with a $115 million budget.
