Tonight the world of movies and TV will be honored at the 74th Golden Globe Awards, which honors accomplishments throughout Hollywood. Some people don’t pay as close attention to these festivities merely because they aren’t the Academy Awards, but in many ways, the Golden Globes and the televised ceremony is far superior to the Oscars.

Considering the amount of organizations and publishing outlets the award acclaim to the best films and TV of the year, the awards circuit has become flooded with honors. Ultimately, movie and TV fans get to pick and choose what awards actually matter to them, based on the group of people who awards the merits, how they’re selected, or what they choose to highlight. Many awards are dismissed because they haven’t been around as long as others, but with the amount of awards handed out and top 10 lists created every year, everyone gets to pay attention to the awards that matter to them, even if it’s not as “esteemed” an award.

Here are the reasons we think the Golden Globes deserve more respect and what makes the whole experience more favorable to the Academy Awards! Which awards shows do you most pay attention to? Let us know in the comments!

Predicts Oscar Winners

When it comes to any type of award, there are often very little surprises as to who wins. There are generally 10-15 films all gaining the same type of buzz, so when someone wins a Golden Globe, odds get even better that they’ll win again in six weeks at the Academy Awards. Also, since this is one of the first award ceremonies of the year, it can tip people off to what will be the major contenders at the Oscars and gives people a chance to see movies they might not have seen otherwise in the weeks leading up to the “bigger” ceremony.

More Efficient Broadcast

One of the major complaints about the Academy Awards every year is that the program runs longer than it is scheduled. Some could say that all the moments that an acceptance speech goes over an allotted time can add up over the night, but more likely is that the is a chance for the film industry to pat itself on the back with a series of vignettes that pay tribute to all the things they accomplish throughout the year, rather than focus solely on who is winning the awards everyone tuned in to see. The Golden Globes, however, manage to run a much tighter ship in its distribution of awards, and although they’ve run over their scheduled time, doesn’t have nearly the same reputation for being bloated with fluff.

Includes More Diverse Films

Who’s to say that Moonlight is a better film than film than Deadpool, when they both approach completely different subject matter from completely different perspectives with completely different tones and have completely different objectives? Well, the Golden Globe Awards know that difficulty, but rather than dismiss the accomplishments of La La Land because it’s not serious enough, can respect that it’s just a great a film as something like Hacksaw Ridge. They even make that distinction with acting awards, so Ryan Reynolds can receive acclaim for playing Wade Wilson in a way the Oscars probably wouldn’t recognize.

TV Included

With the rise of premium content on TV, an epic series like Game of Thrones can often overshadow the budget, production value, acting, and storylines of the best movies. Although the awards themselves make distinctions between TV and movies, the fact that you can see awards for the best actress on a comedy series and later see an award for best adapted screenplay helps level the playing field and remind everyone in the room that TV can do plenty of things that movies could never accomplish.

People are Drunk

Rather than a room full of the entertainment industry sitting in a massive theater staring at one focal point, the Golden Globe Awards features dinner with plenty of drinks, creating a much more casual vibe. People can chat with one another, turn around and interact with other tables, and the socializing can get so carried away that people have clearly been inebriated while distributing and accepting awards. This is Hollywood, it’s time everyone relaxed and had some fun!
