For cast and crew alike, participating in the production of a new Star Wars movie can be a daunting prospect. For actors, the chance for a life-changing role in one of the most popular franchises in the world must be weighed against the rabid and intense fan reactions.

That’s exactly what Jack Reynor was faced with when he was in the running to be cast as the replacement Harrison Ford in the next Star Wars anthology film.

The Untitled Han Solo project had a highly publicized audition process before the role finally went to Alden Ehrenreich.

But Reynor, who had his first big break when he appeared in Transformers: Age of Extinction, ultimately was passed over for the role. And he’s not remorseful for it. In fact, he could only see that casting going two different ways.โ€จโ€จWhile speaking with the Irish Times, Reynor revealed why he was relieved he didn’t get the role:

“That Han Solo movie is going to be really tough. I think the guy who is doing it is a really good actor [Ehrenreich], but, for myself, I was afraid of it. I kept thinking: if you f**k this up you’ll ruin people’s childhoods. If it doesn’t turn out great, you won’t be forgiven. That’s a lot of responsibility. And even if it goes great, you’ll do it, people will know you only from that and that defines your career. That would be very difficult. For me, working on original material is very important.”

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s next installment in the A Star Wars Story spinoff series is currently in production and is scheduled to release in theaters next year.

Only time will tell if Reynor made a mistake or if the actor dodged a bullet. Or maybe there’s a third option, one where both actors have fulfilling and successful careers due to their respective choices.
