In the Hostiles and Calamities episode of The Walking Dead on Sunday night, Eugene Porter was escorted around Negan‘s Sanctuary and treated like a king, of sorts. However, he had to be introduced to the community and their methods and rules shortly after arrival.

While being escorted around the common area of the Sanctuary, Eugene heard all about the points system and how the regular people of the community “eat like s—” while the good stuff is saved for the higher ranking members. During the tour, though, a subtle detail was hidden in Eugene’s observations which might turn out to be more important.

Eugene saw a red headed kid stealing bread from one of the stations within the Sanctuary. No one else seemed to notice but Eugene gave a glare in the kid’s direction, ultimately opting not to say anything about what he had witnessed.

There are two big takeaways from this moment which might offer a bit of insight into where Eugene’s true allegiance lays.

First of all, many fans are suspecting Eugene of betraying Rick Grimes and the people of Alexandria in his apparent allegiance to Negan. He quickly answered Negan’s question and said, “I’m Negan,” adding, “I was Negan before” and “stone cold Negan” to the commitment. However, he is already covering for the people of the Sanctuary by not making Negan, Laura, or other high-ranking Saviors aware of the theft taking place on their ground level.

If Eugene is willing to lie for the survival of the common person in the Sanctuary, there might be some good left inside of him, after all.

Furthermore, witnessing a young person who was clearly dirty and struggling to survive with less privileges than Eugene has become accustomed might have opened Eugene’s eyes. While spending nights with the wives and eating food which is actually enjoyable is certainly quite a nice experience, doing it while stepping on other people is not a principle Rick or most other survivors would support. Eugene may be buying into Negan’s scheme on the surface but, beneath it all, he is likely just doing what he has to in order to survive and will support the freedom of the Saviors who do not wish to be confined to the walls of the Sanctuary.
