Following a couple of shocking deaths at the hands of Negan and his Saviors, a potential new threat is being introduced while Alexandria already has more than enough on its plate. Still, another new group or at least person has appeared and, given their creepy presentation, will likely be a new foe on the AMC series.

So, who is this person?

Events of The Walking Dead Season 7 and earlier in the comics give us a good idea of who this might be.

On the following slides, we explore the possibilities of who this mysterious figure is lurking around the Alexandria Safe-Zone.

The Whisperers

The knee jerk reaction for fans of The Walking Dead is to think the mysterious figure is a member of the Whisperers.

The Whisperers are a formidable group in Robert Kirkman’s comicsย responsible for more main character deaths than Negan and the Saviors — most of whichย happened on one page. They cover themselves in zombie guts and faces and walk amongst the dead, living barbarically with no rules.

The AMC series only stands around an equivalent point to issue #111 of the comics. This group was not introduced until issue #130.

“I will also say, though, that it’s not impossible that the Whisperers could come along or aspects of them could come along earlier than the timeline of the book,” showrunner Scott Gimple told ComicBook.com in an exclusive interview ahead of Episode 7×06.

Of course, the Whisperers may be teased with a more formal and horrifying introduction coming much later on television. Boots and wondering around eerily does fit their description, after all.

Dwight

In the comics, Dwight turns out to be an okay guy when he betrays Negan ahead of the war between Alexandria and the Saviors.ย

Perhaps Dwight has made his way to Alexandria in an effort to find an in with the community which currently hates his guts? We do expect him to reveal an altered allegiance before the war begins. This could be the start. The villain’s henchman does wear boots which may have been the ones seen in the closing moments of the series.

If Dwight were to sneak into Alexandria, he likely would not receive a warm welcome. Such a move would be dangerous for him, which makes him an unlikely candidate. Plus, his reveal to be on Rick’s side came at the Kingdom in the comics, so this would be a considerable deviation from the moment.

Oceanside

It’s entirely possible the women of the Oceanside community followed Tara all the way back to Alexandria.

Tara ran from the the community frantically, likely not paying attention to whether or not she was being tracked. Keep in mind, she also paused to pick up the keycard with “PPP” written on it while holding out hope to find Heath (who is still missing…Was it him, maybe?).

If the women of Oceanside come to Alexandria and reveal themselves as potential friends who have a whole bunch of guns, Alexandria would be in much better shape for battle.

A Zombie Herd

Negan’s Saviors have repeatedly made mention of a zombie herd in the area. The have been directing its movement for weeks now. Fat Joey was put in charge of the task but we know he’s not going to be running that show anymore.

The Saviors do, however, use zombies as weapons in the comics. It is entirely possible that they are manipulating a horde so that they can unleash it on Alexandria, the Hilltop, and/or the Kingdom should any of the communities choose to misbehave.

Or, maybe, the horde just went off path after Mark decided he wanted a little nookie-nookie and took the day off of leading them a certain war.

The Governor

We never really did see the Governor die, right? Maybe, it’s him.

Okay, we all know the Governor is super dead, but the creepy shots of somebody watching Rick’s community were very reminiscent of Season 3 when the Governor and the soldiers of Woodbury were creeping on the prison. Shots of the menace watching Carol kill walkers at the fence and other people walking around from the perspective of the unwelcome guests were not uncommon.

What a plot twist it would be if The Walking Dead brought the Governor back and he and Rick teamed up to take on the Saviors. Yeah, never happen, but a fun thought!
