A few British tabloids report that a new Doctor has been cast on the BBC‘s long-running wibbly, wobbly, timey-wimey series Doctor Who, but a statement from the network casts some doubt.
However, given the nature of the news and the fact that bookies in the UK have closed bets on “Who is the next Doctor?” we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you what’s going on.

Today the Mirror reported they’ve received word from a source that Kris Marshall has been cast as Peter Capaldi‘s replacement. The actor from My Family, Death In Paradise, and Love, Actually is said to be making appearance sometime in Series 10, which is set to premiere tonight on BBC America.
This would break a newer tradition from showrunner Steven Moffat’s run on the series, in which the Doctor’s regeneration would normally take place during the Christmas Special (which Capaldi said he’s participating in, but really who knows anything at this point).

But with Moffat and Capaldi’s departure from the series after this slate of episodes and the arrival of incoming showrunner Chris Chinball, we expect things to get shaken up.
The Mirror states that Marshall might be seen before the Christmas Special and could debut sometime during the current run.
โจHowever, a spokesperson for the BBC denied the Marshall’s participation and stated “no casting decisions have yet been made for the 11th series.”
The Mirror contends that could be careful wording on the BBC’s part, as if Marshall appears in the current run it would not count as a casting decision for the 11th year.
So, is Marshall the next Doctor to pilot the TARDIS? While new companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) stick around for another year of adventures?
All of this seems up in the air at this point. We should find out more soon as Doctor Who is set to premiere the first episode of Capaldi and Moffat’s final season tonight.
