Westworld: More Evidence That Bernard Is A Robot

Mysteries finally started to unravel in episode 6 of Westworld and we learned the answers to some of our questions, like who is behind the Delos data breach.

While Teresa's scheme was being uncovered, we noticed quite a few things about Bernard that we haven't before.

Long Legacy

The first thing we noticed was a few things that he said during his conversations with behavior specialist Elsie as they both worked together to find out what exactly was going on.

During the first conversation, Bernard mentions to Elsie that he has been there "a very long time and knows everything." If he has been there for so long why doesn't he know about the maze or Arnold? The answer is simple, he's a robot and Ford wiped his mind.

Elsie called Bernard to tell him that some of the old relay boxes in the park were recently turned on and are broadcasting voices to the generation 1 hosts - 47 of them to be exact. Bernard reacts by saying, "we haven't used that system in decades!" This also puts Bernard at Westworld since the beginning - another reason why his mind was wiped of Arnold.

The first time Bernard approached Teresa in this episode, he told her that Ford knows they have been sleeping together. Now, how would Ford know this? Simple - Ford has already said that he knows everything that the hosts in the park are doing.

The main point is that Bernard, who is supposed to be overseeing the park as Ford's protoge, failed to see what was happening right in front of his face - that Teresa, who he had grown fond of, is operating a secret mission to steal classified data from the park behind Bernard's back.

Now, this is where it gets a little confusing, but stay with us!

Behavior Modification

First, while in the body shop, Maeve who is completely conscious at this point was forcing the employees to modify her behavior, when one of the employees notices that someone has been messing with her levels down to her primary core in unlogged sessions.

We previously thought access to this data was classified, however the body shop guy, Sylvester had the password, meaning anyone can have the password to change behaviors.

Second, when Elsie called Bernard from the old theater in shut-down sector 3, she told him that she discovered from the old relay box that someone (possibly Arnold, who is supposed to be dead) other than Teresa had been messing with the hosts on a very deep level in unlogged sessions.

Bernard is extremely smart and he should have figured this out, or noticed that something was off with the entire park. However, he was blinded by his feelings for Teresa, so his mind was clouded with other thoughts.

But how didn't he notice? Why did he have feelings for such a cold woman in the first place when he is clearly married?

Again, the answer is simple. Teresa, who has been secretly controlling the generation 1 hosts using the old relays and deeply modifying their behavior, did the same thing to Bernard so he wouldn't catch on to her scheme, because Bernard is a generation 1 robot. She programmed him with feelings for her, manipulating him to be unable to see what was really going on.

Is that enough evidence? Not quite, but as Westworld continues to unravel further, we'll hopefully find out more.

Also, remember that Ford doesn't trust any human in the park because he can't control them. He clearly trusts Bernard, but only because he is really a host that can be controlled!
