In tonight's episode of The Flash, 'Into the Speed Force', Barry Allen found himself back in the Speed Force in an attempt to rescue Wally West. Before he could take Wally back to Earth-1, the show's titular character had to go through a gauntlet of sorts, which included seeing some of the Arrowverse characters that have since passed on.

The characters we saw in the Speed Force include former Central City Police Detective Eddie Thawne, Ronnie Raymond/Firestorm, and Leonard Snart/Captain Cold. If you've watched the Arrowverse shows since the beginning, you'll know the three characters share one thing in common — they're no longer alive. Not only have they passed on, their lives were ended is some sort of sacrificial gesture.

As Barry first entered the Speed Force, he almost immediately encountered Thawne. Thawne, as you may remember, is an ancestor of Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash, and shot himself in the first season to prevent Eobard from existing in the future.

Shortly after Thawne killed himself, a singularity started forming over Central City and Raymon and Martin Stein merged so they could separate in the middle of the storm, creating a nuclear reaction that would destroy the singularity. Once they separated, only Stein survived the ordeal.

Last, Snart's sacrifice came in the waning moments of the first Legends of Tomorrow season. With the Legends coming close to defeating the Time Masters, Snart stayed behind to make sure the Oculus device exploded, ended the Time Masters' regime.

The recurring theme here is simple — those Barry encountered had all sacrificed themselves at some point in the season. Better yet, the way that Barry and Wally were able to leave the Speed Force? Jay Garrick appeared to take Wally's place, effectively sacrificing his position as The Flash of Earth-3 so that Barry and Wally could go back to their families.

The Flash airs Tuesday nights on The CW at 8 p.m. EDT.
