It's the moment X-Men fans have been waiting for: at the end of the X-Men: Apocalypse final trailer we see three metal claws. Oh yeah, Wolverine's here.

Now, we know Wolverine is far from a central character in this movie, and that makes you wonder just how much he's in it at all, and in what way? Well, it looks like we're going to see the full version of that Weapon X origin that's only been teased in previous films.

The setting is a series of stark hallways. Soldiers have been taken down with extreme prejudice. Cyclops says "We had a little help" and we see a bare-armed Wolverine with metal claws.

Now, you may remember, when Wolverine from the future went back and spent some time in past Logan's body in Days of Future Past, he had just the bone claws. The character had not yet been through the Weapon X program. Fast-forwarding to the next decade, it's the perfect time to finally show the sequence in full, as it exists in this (new version of the) universe.

Why do a full Weapon X sequence? Sure, X-Men fans all know the story, and we've seen bits and pieces of it before on screen; but the young X-Men discovering the feral and uncontrollable Wolverine could make for a great single-scene appearance by Hugh Jackman's Logan. The Barry Windsor-Smith look, with the helmet and wires tracking his vitals, would make for a strong visual on screen, as well. It's interesting to note that while he could just as easily be wearing a short-sleeved shirt, the way the shot is revealed with his bare arm seems like it's implying the nearly-bare look from just after the adamantium was applied to his skeleton.

So will we see the full Windsor-Smith look? Probably something like it. One thing we've never seen is Wolverine in a comic book costume, and we're probably not getting that here, either, but getting some specific look from the page to the screen would be a nice consolation prize. The way the tease was setup was definitely implying this wouldn't just be more of the same Logan. Bryan Singer did tease a return to Weapon X, or, chronologically visiting it for the first time.

It's also the perfect bookend to what's supposedly Jackman's final appearance as Wolverine, in the as-yet-untitled Wolverine 3. If that movie is in fact a far-future story based on "Old Man Logan" as they've teased, then making his second-to-last appearance on screen his classic origin story is perfect.

We'll find out when X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27, 2016.
