Wonder Woman: How Steve Trevor Can Return in Future DCEU Movies

(Warning: This Article has MASSIVE SPOILERS!)

Wonder Woman has gotten a lot of positive feedback for its thrilling and moving superheroine origin story, and while star Gal Gadot is rightfully earning her a claim as a bonafide action movie star, there has also been a lot of praise showered on Gadot’s co-star, Chris Pine, who plays cynical spy with heart of gold, Steve Trevor.

The climatic battle of Wonder Woman forces Steve Trevor to sacrifice his own life in order to save Allied Forces from a deadly chemical weapon developed by German military scientist Doctor Poison, leaving a massive hole in Diana/Wonder Woman’s heart – one that she’s never truly filled, a century later.

However, while the Wonder Woman movie saw fit to bring Steve Trevor’s story to a decisive and final close, the larger DC Extended Universe could definitely use an actor of Pine’s caliber and ability popping up in Wonder Woman sequels – as well as future DCEU projects. It’s a resurrection that is already being teased by the cast and crew – but how to do it, since the character is clearly deceased now?

Here are some suggestions for How Steve Trevor Can Return in Future DCEU Movies.

Send In The Clone

The first and most obvious way to bring Steve Trevor back would be to simply introduce another version of the character – which could happen one of two ways: 

1. A clone of Steve Trevor could be created using modern day DCEU scientific techniques. The purpose could be to either learn something that only Col. Trevor knew of before his death, or to use the resurrected Trevor as a way of either helping or hurting Wonder Woman. With advanced/alien technology already part of the DCEU, it’s not that far of a stretch. 
2. Since DC has an extensive history with alternate versions of characters found throughout the multiverse, having some alternate universe of Steve Trevor brought into the main DCEU continuity would be well within parameters – and would give Chris Pine room to craft a slightly (or very) different version of the character. 

Either way it went down, having Steve return to Diana, while never really getting the version of him she lost, would be the sort of turn that could greatly intrigue and entertain audiences. 

Magic

Since Wonder Woman introduces a great deal of magic and mysticism into the DCEU (with mystical artifacts, and an entire magic-themed history of The Greek Gods, Amazons, and man’s world), it’s a definite possibility that some of those resources could be tapped to resurrect a dead man like Steve Trevor. 

The interesting things about the mystical approach to resurrecting Steve would be: 

1. Who or what brought him back. Would it be something benevolent like Amazon magic or a god, like Hades? Or the nefarious scheme of a villain like Felix Faust or Morgaine le Fey? 
2. What state would Steve be in if resurrected this way? Would he “feel alive?” Would he be in control of his own mind and actions? Or would there be some horrible catch to it? 

This would be a particularly interesting way to go if one wanted to create a volatile dynamic between Steve and Diana, or some powerful internal conflict Wonder Woman would have to wrestle with, regarding whether or not to once again let go of her lover. 

Time Jump

Hey, Wonder Woman is already drawing a comparison to Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger, so why not go the distance with it, and steal a note from that movie’s ending? 

CA: TAF famously ends with Steve Rogers/Captain America also sacrificing himself to stop a massive plane carrying a deadly weapon from destroying Allied Forces, leaving his lover behind in the process. Steve wakes up in modern day, having been preserved in stasis for decades, and must thereafter cope with his loss, and find his way through a modern world setting. Personally speaking, this option is our personal favorite for how Steve Trevor could return to the DCEU: it’s easy to combine with any of the aforementioned scenarios (like a sorcerer plucking Trevor from that doomed plane) and offers one of the more fun possibilities for seeing and Diana reunited. 

Wonder Woman milks a lot of great moments from the second act storyline of Diana being a “fish out of water” in WWI-era London, while Steve Trevor tries to protect her hopeful naivete, while guiding her through the realities of twentieth-century society. Having the dynamic reversed, and Trevor being the “fish out of water” that Diana must guide through the modern world, would be a ridiculously fun call back for fans to enjoy – and one that Pine and Gal Gadot could definitely pull off. 

Prequel

This is the least favorite option on our list – but probably one of the easiest for DC Films to pull off. 

Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor is a highly capable and experienced spy in Wonder Woman – but it’s clear that he took an extensive life journey to arrive at that point. Chronicling some of Trevor’s previous missions/adventures could be done any number ways: 

1. Wonder Woman could go back in time for a new adventure with Trevor, before they originally met.
2. Steve Trevor and his team could lead their own spinoff film. 
3. Trevor could be featured as part of a flashback sequence or spinoff short, in a mission that has some relevance or importance to the modern DCEU. 

Since the DCEU has already established its mythos over a wide span of history, some dips into its past are a logical pathway to take.
