Bleach Might Retcon Its Finale’s Most Divisive Scene With Time Travel Twist

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War made a massive change to the anime’s final arc with the latest episode of the series, and it might be on the verge of fixing a major issue that fans had with the original manga with a new time travel twist. Bleach ended its original manga run ten long years ago, and the final season of its new era of the anime has been making all sorts of adjustments thanks to creator Tite Kubo’s close work with the anime team. But the latest change happens to be the biggest yet.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War just made a huge change to the anime that not only saw Ichigo reveal a brand new Bankai form never seen in the original events of the manga, but it also seemingly led to the death of Orihime Inoue. But while this is a massive change to the series’ canon, it’s also surprisingly a way that the franchise can retcon the fact that Ichigo never got to use this new Bankai in the original. It’s sparked a whole new timeline, and it could return to the main timeline with a twist in a future episode.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Just Revealed A Whole New Timeline

In Bleach’s original manga, at this point in the final fight against Yhwach, he had used his Almighty power to break Ichigo’s Zanpakuto before he could enact his Bankai. Shortly after he had claimed that he saw into the future, and thus broke the Bankai as a sign of some twisted form of respect for Ichigo’s power. Almighty was then explained to not be a power that simply lets him see into the future, but instead allows him to alter the future across the many potential timelines that Yhwach is seeing at all times.

So while this is a huge change from how the manga played out, it fits perfectly into the events of the final arc of the series. Ichigo was able to unleash his new Bankai, and Orihime seemingly unleashed her true power to defeat Yhwach once and for all. This is likely just a whole new timeline that fans are getting to see play out in the anime, and could then all be wrapped back into the official “canon” events of the series once Yhwach uses his Almighty to then return to the series’ manga adaptation.

What Does This Mean for Bleach’s Anime Future?

With Orihime seemingly dying at the end of the latest episode, Yhwach resetting this timeline would be the ultimate official retcon in all senses of the word. This huge change to the anime has resulted in the most successful episode with fans to date, and it’s no surprise as to why given that the franchise might be using this as a way to further expand on that final battle with Yhwach. Fans have been complaining for a very long time that it had been rushed, and that was because it actually was being pushed along by Shueisha at the time.

Bleach at the time of its ending was doing not well with Shonen Jump as it was selling worse than other emerging hits at the time, and it’s why the anime even got cancelled long before it even approached an adaptation of the final arc. This led to a truncated version of the final battle between Ichigo and Yhwach, and now Kubo gets to use this episode as a way to showcase what Almighty truly is while giving Orihime a big moment at the same time. But it all depends on whether or not the anime continues to change even more as it heads to the grand finale.
