Harley’s introduction as the Joker’s henchwench over two decades ago on Batman: The Animated Series made her an instant fan-favorite and a prime candidate for a live-action treatment down the line.
Well, Harley Quinn finally gets her shot in Warner Brothers Suicide Squad, coming to theaters this August, played by Margot Robbie. With DC and Warners releasing the second trailer yesterday, fans get a better picture of how Harley is being represented here. Sure, some purists will state that’s not their Harley, but Robbie is looking to be everything fans love about Harley as she definitely upstaged the rest of the squad in the new trailer.
Let’s take a look at the best Harley moments from the trailer and keep the Harley hype rolling!
A chemical romance.
Blink and you could have missed this moment.ย
In what seems like an eerie baptism, Harley is being submerged into toxic chemicals and a red and blue heart surrounds the lovers. Could this be Harley’s origin? If it is, it could infer that Jared Leto’s Joker is primarily used in flashbacks as it looks like Harley is already an established villain by the start of the movie.ย
ย
Say hello, Harley!
ย
Every spry and silly, Harley makes her introduction introduction to prison guards with a yawn and a smile. “Hello, boys!”
We get the sense she is the injection of humorous wiles that the DCEUย sorely needs. Even better is her joke about hearing voices in her head…which is pretty feasible given her history.ย
She’s the bright ball of murderous joy compared to the enraged killers on the team, and it shows.ย
A quiet powderkeg full of psychosis.
ย
Juxtapositioningย Captain Boomerang’s screaming in the trailer, we see Harley here, ever the student reading what seems like…a harlequin romance novel. Visual gag aside, it shows that she might be the craziest one of the group, but at heart she’s quiet and passive until that moment where she’s the one beating you up with a baseball bat. She comes across harmless, then you remember how she used to roll with the Joker.
Such a lady.ย
“Don’t!”
ย
Again, another blink and you’ll miss it moment, we see Joker and Harley in Joker’s customย lambo. We’ve seen this scene before in the first trailer, but we there’s something different here.ย
“Don’t!”
She screams at the Joker, who slams his fists in seemingly frustration. It looks as though they’re on their way to some sort of formal banquet the way he’s decked out in a white tux and her in a possible gown. Here, she’s scared, though.ย
Was there something that tested their relationship in that moment? Could this be another flashback? It looks like a moment of defiance, and you’ve got to be either brave or crazy to stand up to the Joker. Maybe both.ย
Bad times may pass, but never bad guys.
ย
Rick Flagg, played by Joel Kinnaman, may be in over his head.ย
Plus, some girls can’t so no to jewelry.ย
At the end of the trailer, we see Harley breaking into a store and taking metallic purse. The one she’s seen holding in the first promotional image. Rick, ready to put down his dogs, scolds Harley about that and asks what the hell is wrong with “you people”.ย
Witty as usual, Harley explains that they’re bad guys and this is what they do. They take what they want when they want. It’s a fun concept that Harley knows she’s a bad guy and not some insane person that can’t tell the difference. She embraces her villainy instead of trying to redeem herself and goes on a mild “shopping” spree.ย
So readers, what are you expecting from Robbie’s performance as Harley? Are you excited to see such a beloved character on screen after all these years? Or are you still slightly trepidaciousย in how they’re going to handle her? Sound off in the comments below.ย
