DC has provided ComicBook.com with an exclusive preview of next week’s Sixpack and Dogwelder: Hard-Travelin’ Heroz #1, from writer Garth Ennis with artist Russ Braun and colorist David Kalisz.

Inspired by (and literally holding a copy of Green Lantern/Green Arrow: Hard-Traveling Heroes, Sixpack decides it’s time for a Hail Mary attempt at keeping Section Eight together by taking his trusty right-hand man Dogwelder on a journey of self-discovery.
…Oh, wait. That can’t be good.
“Nope, it’s simplicity itself,” Ennis told ComicBook.com when we asked Braun whether it was difficult reinventing characters from the stylized world of Ennis and John McCrea’s Hitman for the current DC Universe. “I know the characters inside out — I’m their co-creator, after all — and writing them is pure pleasure. As for fitting them in the world, it’s actually the other way around- you make the DCU fit them. Which is actually part of the fun.”
After a lengthy hiatus, the demented team of self-styled superheroes showed up in All-Star Section 8 last year, part of the publisher’s DC You publishing initiative. While most of the series from DC You have gone away now, two key members of Section 8 are getting their own miniseries branded for DC’s much more successful publishing initiative, the recently-launched Rebirth.
“People keep mentioning that, but I don’t actually know what it is, exactly,” Ennis told me. “Some sort of relaunch, I’d imagine. I suppose I could google it, but where do you find the time?”
Sixpack and Dogwelder: Hard-Travelin’ Heroz #1 hits the stands on Wednesday. You can ask your local comic shop to hold you a copy, or pre-order one on ComiXology here. Note that unlike the ongoing titles from DC’s Rebirth initiative, this book (like All-Star Batman) is not holding the line at $2.99, and will cost you nearly four bucks.
You can read my full interview with Ennis on Monday.

In the tradition of the original Hard-Traveling Heroes, Green Lantern and Green Arrow, Sixpack and Dogwelder are ready to bring their allegedly socially aware brand of justice to the lands beyond Gotham City!
After the events of ALL-STAR SECTION EIGHT, Sixpack is fighting to keep what’s left of his team together. Dogwelder has gone in search of his past, while newlyweds Bueno Excellente and Guts are dealing with some fidelity issues. Could Section Eight be done for good?
But everything changes when a mysterious trenchcoat-wearing chain smoker offers our favorite dog enthusiast some clues about his true nature. Is Dogwelder everything he seems? Or is he meant for something greater?
